Can You Put Perfume on Dogs?

My dog stays clean for exactly one or two days after a bath. If your dog is the same, you know well that sniffing around in the garbage, running in the garden, and slinking into an open bathroom makes them sweaty, dirty, and stinky. In fact, after a bath, if they are not dried properly, they can give off a musty odor. No wonder it makes you think, can you put perfume on dogs? Yes, the good news is that you need to know more about it before you spray your perfume on your poor dog.

To spray or not to spray

Some experts feel that perfumes are fine for dogs, and you can use them freely. However, some experts are of the opinion that a dog is meant to smell like a dog, and perfumes should not be used on them. Dog perfumes are not a new thing. They have been around for decades. Dogs have been the favorite pet for humans, and they have spent so much time by our sides that we want to humanize them in small ways.

Do dogs need perfumes?

Are you one of those people who think that perfume for dogs is completely ridiculous? Why do you need to put on perfume? You don’t need perfumes, and neither does your dog, but it is nice to smell good, isn’t it? The market is full of dog perfumes ranging from cheap to luxe products. It is best to ask your vet and try the perfume to check for allergies. Avoid using human perfumes on dogs and choose wisely.

What kind of perfume is best for dogs?

An occasional application of human perfume is alright, but not regularly. Once in a while, you can drop your perfume behind your dog’s ears or over the tail, and it is quite safe for your dog. Most human perfumes can dry out a dog’s coat due to the pH balance, which is meant for humans. Sometimes allergic reactions are possible due to the difference between human and dog skin.

The best thing is that many dog perfumes are available in the market to choose from. Most good dog perfumes do not contain any alcohol good for your dog’s skin. Your dog’s perfume may smell similar to your perfume, but its properties are completely different. Never put so much perfume on your dog that it covers up even the scent of a disease or illness that your dog may be having. Dogs do not need perfumes, but we want them to smell good, so we must find the right perfume for them.

The right way to use perfume on dogs

Though applying perfume on dogs is not very complicated, you need to keep some points in mind. Put perfume on the furry areas and avoid bare skin because it may irritate and cause itching. Keep the perfume away from sensitive areas such as the eyes, nose, ears, and genitals.

After a bath is the best time to apply the perfume, the perfume will last for a longer time. Never apply perfume daily, even if you find your dog smelling bad. Once a week is ideal, or at least have a gap of 3 to 4 days between perfume applications.

Keep your dog smelling good all the time

Perfumes are alright, but you cannot use them all the time, but you can still keep your dog smelling good if you follow a few things.

  • Give your dog a good bath once a week or once a fortnight, depending on how dirty it gets. Bath frequency also depends on age, size, fur, etc. Use a deodorizing shampoo, and after bath, ensure that the dog is fully dry.
  • Every time your dog comes back from outside, clean the paws properly. If they have played in water outside, you need to dry it fully. The wet dog smell is really bad and can fill the whole house. Use a brush to remove dirt and dust and even small insects that could be stuck to their fur.
  • The ears and mouth of a dog emit a lot of smells. Try to keep their ears and mouth clean. After the bath, use a liquid ear cleaner to keep the ears clean and dry them properly. Use a dog toothpaste and brush to keep the mouth clean. If you notice bad smells even after the cleaning, you must take the dog to the vet because the bad smells could be a sign of some underlying illness.

Conclusion

If you want your dog to smell good, it is your choice. When needed on your dog, you can use perfume to mask any bad smells. After all, as a pet parent, you know what is best for your dog. Ensure that you don’t use the wrong product and apply it carefully. Always keep your dog’s well-being ahead of the smell it emanates, and you cannot go wrong.
